As the Alabama state capital, Montgomery is the second largest city in Alabama. Founded in 1819, Montgomery grew rapidly due to the high value of cotton and, unfortunately, the slave trade. In 1846, it became the state capital and even served as the capital of the Confederate States of America (briefly) in 1861.

In the post-World War II era, African Americans launched their effort for voting rights and ending racial segregation in Montgomery. As such, Montgomery has many sites and experiences related to the Civil Rights Movement.
